1941 Dodge WD21 technical stuff |
There are going to be some problems with this thing; (updated 2006 - in the middle of it) The original chassis is set up for the tube shocks, longitudinal fuel tank, plain rear and front bumpers, and no transfer case. I've had to add a military VC crossmember to mount the transfer case, bolt on the special rear crossmember carrying the bumperettes, and still have to attach the special angle iron to take the front strap of the military fuel tank. The mounts for the tube shocks will have to go, and be replaced by a set of knee-action military shocks, and that will involve a load of drilling. I'll try to fit a winch on the front but not sure there will be room. All of the work on the extreme rear of the chassis to fit the Hy-Rail adapters is done - front still to do. I'll have to rework the VC rear prop shaft I have to suit the wheelbase. If I'm lucky the existing rear axle will take the VC type of U-joint flange - if not it'll have to be a special prop with VC military front and civilian flanged rear joints. Bodywork should be nothing drastic. Fill the holes for the cowl lights and cab fuel filler, repair the bottom edges of the body, cut a hole for the rear mounted fuel tank filler. The rear doors and the door underpanel will all be loose, so I'll have to jig set it and cut sections out the underpanel to clear the bumperettes. This is exactly what Dodge did to mount the same parts on the VC 6 though. Dual rear wheels will mean using pickup rear fenders to get the width. Roof, floor, engine rebuild, plumbing and wiring, brakes, same as usual. I will have to match the standard front tyres on the VC rims with over profile rears as those dual wheels wont take standard width and the rolling radius needs to be the same.
